What I do here

I coach Weightlifting classes and occasionally cover for CrossFit, but I run some things in the background, like our finances and membership admin. I’d like to think I contribute to some of the ideas around how we run things, but that’s mostly Jamie!

Qualifications

PhD in Behaviour Science, CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and Level 1 Weightlifting Coach.

The best thing about coaching at Beyond Walls is… Seeing people push beyond their own limits in fitness, but also in life, and finding lifelong friends in the process.

How did you end up at Beyond Walls?

By following our vision of a post-corporate life and basically creating the gym we would have wanted to join.

What did your fitness life look like before CrossFit/HYROX?

As a kid, I did some dancing and gymnastics, dabbled in diving in high school, but I wasn’t raised around sporty activities. I was very big into cycling and surfing when I lived in the Bay Area in California, and believe it or not, did some running as well. But after moving to New York City where the waves and hills were less available, I finally found CrossFit.

What are your favourite sessions to coach?

No surprise: weightlifting! I found my love of weightlifting after finding CrossFit, and to my surprise, it came easy for me. I love the technical aspects of it, and I also love the different pace of weightlifting class where it’s all about focus, one lift at a time.

What is something members might not know about you?

My “day job” is leadership and people consulting, which is what I chose to focus on after leaving my corporate job in 2023. I’ve lived in the UK for 8 years after moving over with my job at Chanel.

What is your advice for nervous newbies?

Channel your inner child! Remember the days of swings and monkey bars on playgrounds when we had no fear, and just think about that spirit of adventure in every class.

What inspired you to coach?

I love teaching, though I usually teach things like how to be a good manager or leader. So the transition to coaching CrossFit and weightlifting was just an extension of this.

What does a good day at Beyond Walls look like?

Coaching a class where someone surprises themselves by lifting more than they thought they could! And grabbing a coffee after classes sitting in the sun just chatting to everyone.
