The best thing about coaching at Beyond Walls is… All the new people that have come into my life, and whether they know it or not, lift me up every day.

How did you end up at Beyond Walls?

I met Jamie and Julie just before lockdown at a small CrossFit gym in Windsor. When I say small, it was the size of our members area. Coming out of lockdown we again reintroduced ourselves as members at another gym, trained alongside each other, and later I started coaching them in class. We became friends and they hinted at the idea of opening a gym. I went through some tough times and didn’t join immediately but the door was always open, and when I was ready, Beyond Walls helped pick me up. They’re family now and I love them very much.

What did your fitness life look like before CrossFit/HYROX?

I played many sports growing up but rugby was my passion and I did all my strength and conditioning training to be better at rugby.

What are your favourite sessions to coach?

Every class is special, it’s the special moments in the classes that make me happy. The banter, the PBs, the enthusiasm, the effort. Makes my heart very happy.

What is something members might not know about you?

I am a complete nerd, I play computer games every night, watch far too much anime, and spend far too much time watching professional gamers stream.

What is your advice for nervous newbies?

The nervous newbie who walks into the gym, will always be ahead of the one who never starts.

What inspired you to coach?

My beautiful wife Meg inspired me to take the leap.

What does a good day at Beyond Walls look like?

It’s the classic ratio of number of members in class vs number of hugs received. The more hugs, the better my day. My day is made better by every person in class, and if I can return that feeling of being noticed and appreciated only a fraction. I am happy.
