What I do here

I’m the owner so a bit of everything. I coach, help run the business, write far too many announcements, and try to make sure Beyond Walls keeps moving in the right direction.

Qualifications

CrossFit Level 2 Trainer.

The best thing about coaching at Beyond Walls is… That, if you let it, this place will change your life.

How did you end up at Beyond Walls?

Julie and I wanted to build something that felt different from a normal gym. Somewhere people could train properly, be coached well, feel part of a real community and actually enjoy the process.

What did your fitness life look like before CrossFit/HYROX?

I had always trained in some form, but CrossFit changed how I thought about fitness. It made training measurable, varied, challenging and about becoming more capable, not just looking fit.

What are your favourite sessions to coach?

The sessions where members say things like, “I haven’t done this since…” but there is lots of laughter and people have a go. Whether that’s handstands, rope climbs or box jumps, they come in not knowing what they are capable of and leave with a massive grin on their faces.

What is something members might not know about you?

My first job was delivering early morning pots of tea at my mum and dad’s Bed & Breakfast in Paignton. I was about 10 and did it for tips only, because Mum was too tight to pay me!

What is your advice for nervous newbies?

Yes, you’ll be nervous the first couple of times you walk in. Yes, there will be words and movements that are not familiar. But don’t stress, nobody is looking at you, you are not holding anybody up, and you are not in the way. This place is for you.

What inspired you to coach?

I love seeing people realise they are capable of more than they thought. Coaching gives you a front-row seat to that, and that is a pretty special thing to be part of.

What does a good day at Beyond Walls look like?

We always wanted Beyond Walls to feel like it belongs to the community, so seeing people coming and going, coaches busy, coffee flowing and members training is just brilliant. We focus on three things: coaching, community and facility, and every day we try to make each of them a little bit better. When the gym feels alive like that, I still have moments where I think, “this is exactly why we built it.”
