Atrophy: Lessons Learned from Building Beyond Walls (and Why You Should Care About It)

Aeroplanes burn most fuel getting off the runway.

During the gruelling days setting up Beyond Walls, I clung to this analogy. It reminded me that the initial grind—though brutal—was temporary. I’d fall asleep thinking about the Law of Conservation of Energy (spoiler alert: energy can’t be created or destroyed, only transformed) and the amount of energy it was taking to transform an empty shell into something extraordinary.

Fast forward three months…the tyres have (just about) left the runway! We’re not at cruising altitude yet, but hey, we’re climbing!

While Beyond Walls is robust by design, it’s like a living organism—interconnected and dynamic. Like the plants in the members’ area, if left alone or neglected for too long they will wither; equipment breaks, bathrooms get messy, floors sticky…and our glorious box becomes a shadow of its former self.

But with regular, intentional, well targeted TLC? Beyond Walls thrives. And what’s fascinating…this doesn’t just apply to gyms. It’s about most things…including you. Your body. Your relationships. Your ambitions.

Atrophy is natural, but decline is not inevitable

Atrophy: What Is It, and Why Should You Care?

First, let’s decode the word: Atrophy. Fancy word, simple meaning—it’s the slow, sneaky wear and tear that creeps up on everything. At the gym, it’s when the bike pedals start wobbling, the barbells stop spinning (yes, they spin!), or the floor mysteriously becomes a slip hazard.

In our bodies, Atrophy looks a little different and can affect us in many ways. One example; starting around age 30 (sorry to be the bearer of bad news), we begin losing muscle mass at a rate of about 3–5% per decade. By the time we hit our 60s, this can significantly impact things like strength, balance, and independence.

Atrophy happens, but its pace is not pre-determined.

Fighting the Relentless Force of Decay (a.k.a. Atrophy)

While Beyond Walls is new and our equipment almost box-fresh, we want to keep it this way for as long as possible. We’ve boiled our approach down to three simple habits:

  1. Pre-emptive Maintenance: We don’t wait for things to break. We clean, service, and repair before problems arise. It’s not glamorous, but it works.
  2. Continual Vigilance: Every coach is a watchful eye, and we actively seek feedback from members to spot issues early.
  3. Immediate Resolution: Things will go wrong. That’s life. But when they do, we fix them fast.

Now, here’s the kicker: your body works the exact same way.

Your Body vs. Atrophy: Three Habits to Stay Ahead

  1. Pre-emptive Maintenance: We all start from different fitness places, but moving regularly, moving well and providing healthy fuel is generally a great maintenance plan for your body. This should include strength training to combat muscle loss,     stretching to preserve flexibility, and eating a balanced diet to support energy and recovery. At Beyond Walls we also believe in bonding this all together with a supportive, encouraging community.
  2. Continual Vigilance: Think of this as both informal monitoring (pay attention to how your body feels, look out for unusual stiffness, fatigue, discomfort or unexpected changes) and formal monitoring (InBody scan, Whoop/Apple/Oura health     trackers or regular health check-up). Listen to your body, learn to interpret your data, and tempting as it may be, don’t hide from the results.
  3. Immediate Resolution: Address aches, pains, or imbalances immediately. Rest and modify your routine to let your body recover and heal. Don’t ignore warning signs, as delays can lead to long-term setbacks. Talk about it, get support and advice…don’t turn to social media!
Pro tip: Men between 35–55, this one’s especially for you. Statistically, you’re the most likely group to avoid seeking help. Stop it. Get support. It’s worth it.

The Bigger Picture

We don’t want Beyond Walls (or its members) to just survive, we want us all to thrive!

The truth is that even with these three underpinning habits, at some point in the future Beyond Walls will cease to exist. We hope (and expect) that this is a long, long time away. But, with these three habits we know that Beyond Walls will be in the best shape it can possibly be.  It will be fit and ready to serve and support its members.

The same applies to you and your body. Pre-emptive work, some vigilance and, when its needed, quick action, will keep you strong, capable, and ready for whatever life throws at you.

You’re not in this alone, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Together, let’s fight Atrophy one squat, one clean floor, one deep stretch, and one squeaky rower at a time. Let’s thrive, not just survive. 💪
